Privacy Policy
- There is no account. We don't know who you are.
- Apple Translation runs on your device. With an AI model, page text goes directly to the provider you chose — never through our servers.
- Your settings, site rules and API keys sync through your own iCloud. We can't read them.
- We collect anonymous usage statistics under a random device ID. They never include web addresses, websites, page text, translations or keys.
- We don't sell data, show ads or track you across apps and websites.
This policy covers the Tessel app and its Safari extension on iPhone, iPad and Mac ("Tessel", "we"). It explains what data is involved when you use Tessel, where it goes, and what we can and cannot see.
1. Web pages you translate
To translate a page, Tessel's Safari extension reads the text of that page. What happens next depends on the translation method you pick:
- Apple Translation (the default) translates entirely on your device using Apple's Translation framework. The text does not leave your device.
- AI model sends the text of the page to the AI provider you configured in the app (for example, an OpenAI-compatible service or Anthropic), using your own API key. The request goes directly from your device to that provider; we do not operate a server in between and never receive the text. How the provider handles that text is governed by its privacy policy and terms, and the provider may charge you for the requests.
The extension only translates when you tap Translate or when a rule you set up applies (Auto Translate, "Always translate this website", or continuing on the same website).
Translations are cached on your device so that pages you revisit appear translated right away. The cache is not synced or sent anywhere, and you can clear it in the app's settings.
2. Settings, site rules and API keys
Your settings, website rules and AI provider configuration are stored on your device and synced between your devices through your iCloud account. API keys are stored in the iCloud Keychain. This data is handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy; we have no access to it.
3. Anonymous usage statistics
To understand how Tessel is used and to fix problems, the app and the extension send anonymous usage events to our analytics service. These events are tied to a random identifier created on your device, not to your name, Apple Account, email address or any other identity.

As with any network request, our analytics service sees the IP address the request comes from. We do not use it to identify you. We do not use this data for advertising, do not combine it with data from other companies, and do not sell or share it.
4. Feedback you send
If you choose to send feedback from the app, we receive what you write, the topic you picked, the email address you enter (optional), your device model and system version, and your Tessel settings. When you send feedback from the extension's popup, it also includes the address of the page you were on (without anything after ? or #), the translation status, and a short troubleshooting timeline. The feedback screen tells you this before you send. We use feedback only to answer you and to fix problems.
5. Data we don't collect
Tessel has no account system, no advertising and no third-party tracking or advertising SDKs. We don't access your browsing history, and the extension does nothing on a page until you translate it or a rule you set applies.
6. Children
Tessel is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal information from them.
7. Your choices
- Use Apple Translation only, and no page text leaves your device.
- Remove AI providers and keys in the app at any time.
- Clear the translation cache in the app's settings.
- Turn off the extension in Safari's settings, or delete the app, to stop all data processing by Tessel.
- To ask about or delete feedback you sent, contact us using the details below.
8. Changes to this policy
If we change how Tessel handles data, we will update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect.
